What is
Pathetics Nation?
Pathetics Nation is an Oakland A's blog. Here, there's none of that "In Billy We Trust" bullshit. And we won't try to sell you any T-shirts, either. (We don't need to--we have real jobs.) We love the A's, but we tell it like it is.

Sad but true: The T-shirt salesman who runs Athletics Nation also runs fan websites for the Los Angeles Angels, the Texas Rangers, the Seattle Mariners, and even the San Francisco Giants--all teams that REAL A's fans hate with a passion. .

Moyer owns the AAA's. Zito owns a 3-8 record.

Do you think the San Francisco GiAAAnts signed Alex Sanchez (the first major-leaguer to be suspended under baseball's new steroids-testing policy) so he can keep Barroids company when the latter is activated from the DL?

Oakland begins a three game series with the Bay Area's other triple-A team, the San Francisco GiAAAnts.

The GiAAAnts actually have a record that is WORSE than that of the AAA's. And all Oakland has to do is win one of its next three games to maintain its edge.

More bad news for the AAA's

By The Anti-Blez on Thursday, June 23, 2005

Ken Macha has been selected to be a coach on the American League All-Star Team.

Which means Oakland will be represented in the midsummer classic by:

a) A moron (Macha); and

b) A "mercy" pick (probably one of the relievers)

Beaned again!

Rich Harden returns to the Oakland rotation tonight, and in the spirit of Asslickers Nation, we're going to pretend as though we are old-time, hardened baseball insiders and refer to Harden numerous times as "the kid."

For instance:

Harden has been on the disabled list since May 14. The kid was suffering from a strained left oblique muscle. Let's hope the kid has fully recovered and can return to his early season form. The kid is a key piece in the AAA's march back to mediocrity. If the kid can win 15 more games this season, the team will have a real shot at finishing no fewer than 20 games under .500. The kid makes more money in a single game than a T-shirt salesman will ever earn in a lifetime of selling T-shirts and running a network of baseball fan sites on the Internet. Here's looking at you, kid.

OK, OK, enough of the kidding around. But am I really the only one who has noticed that the T-shirt salesman refers to various Oakland players as "the kid" at least once per blog entry? Does he really want to "belong" that badly?

Barry Zito will try to put his wannabe rock star guitarist career on hold for a few innings today and give the AAA's one of his trademark "quality starts" (5.1 innings, 5 BB, 2 K, 6 H, 2 HR, 4 ER).

That way, he'll be just good enough to lose the game and fall to 3-8 on the season.

All good things must come to an end

By The Anti-Blez on Friday, June 03, 2005

No, we're not talking about the AAA's four-game win streak, which came to a screeching halt on Friday night.

We're talking about Oakland's five-year stretch as one of the top teams in not only the AL West, but all of baseball. They reached the playoffs every season from 2000 to 2003. (They failed to make the playoffs last year, but only by a game.) During that period, they posted a record of 483-326--an incredible 157 games over .500.

This season, they're on pace to finish 36 games under .500.

The T-shirt salesman who runs the Asslickers Nation website won't admit this (since it would hurt his sales), but longtime, real Oakland fans know the truth:

The AAA's are truly pathetic this year.

Beaned again!

The AAA's, whose four-game win streak makes them the American League's hottest team at the moment, face the league's hottest pitcher, Roy Halladay, who is 4-0 in his last four outings with an 0.55 ERA.

Tonight's game will be a real test. Does Oakland have what it takes to be a .500 club this season?

Dilemma

By The Anti-Blez on Thursday, June 02, 2005

A couple of weeks ago I decided to forgo my share of the profits from "In Billy We Trust" T-shirt sales and make a clean break from our sister site, Athletics Nation.

At the time, the AAA's were in the midst of their second eight-game losing streak of the month. I announced that if the team could somehow manage to string together three consecutive wins, I would consider shutting this site down.

Well, the Tampa Bay Dreg Rays* (3-21 record on the road this season) came to town, and the AAA's captured that elusive trio victories.

So, now I must decide whether to retire Pathetics Nation.

Hmm, let's see...

Hell no!

Oakland looks to win three games in a row for just the second time this season.

The last time Oakland won three straight, the team was a game over .500 (at 8-7). The A's looked promising.

That was only six weeks ago.

Today, they are 13 games under .500 (at 19-32). The AAA's are pathetic.

Lucky for us, the Devil Rays came to town.
